Covid-19 In Westchester-and how my family is handling it

By Rachel Fenty Macaroni Kid Publisher March 12, 2020

Westchester County is known for a few things, the Hudson River views, the Kensico Dam, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and now, the hub of the Coronavirus in New York. Two weeks ago coronavirus was just world news in Asia and Italy but now it is here and it is really creating quite the buzz.

If you're like me you've been scouring the internet for what to do. At first, I thought it was all just media panic but the more I am diving into the bowel of the internet I've started taking this a bit more seriously. We didn't go crazy buying bundles of toilet paper but I did make sure each bathroom was fully stocked. We missed the mad dash on the hand sanitizer but fortunately, I had a larger bottle that I was able to dispense into smaller bottles. We also started marking my son's hand with a blue permanent marker and he gets a reward if the X is washed off by the end of the school day.

Our schools are still open but I know a lot of Westchester Schools are either closed or prepping to close. I am prepared for the kids to be home for a long period of time and stocked up on some of their favorites. I even treated my self to some Mint Chocolate Hummus from Delighted By.

I also started to bookmark some Macaroni Kid indoor boredom busters to prepare for the kids to be home here are some fun ones that I thought to share:

The fear of the unknown is real right now and the wonders, if this sniffle or that achy muscle is Covid-19, is enough to drive you crazy. I have been following the Westchester Department of Health on Facebook for the last week and they published this great little guide from the World Health Organization. I appreciate the DOH keeping us updated.

If you feel you have been exposed to a known case, call (866) 588-0195. For any other questions regarding COVID-19 call the NYS Department of Health COVID-19 Hotline (888) 364-3065. I actually called the hotline on Tuesday to ask a question and they were very polite and answered my crazy question without making me feel like I was asking a "dumb question".
