Introducing Our New S.T.EA.M. Play Program!

Why S.T.E.A.M. at Gymboree Play & Music?

We all recall the childhood wonder of transforming a cardboard box into a castle or a paper tube into a rocket. The tactile need to explore materials and make things by hand and use imagination as we play deeply informs the development of our confidence, memories creativity and intellectual reasoning.

Gymboree has always been the global leader at making imagination count. From our curriculum expertise to our well –designed play floor, we’ve been artful play innovators for over 40 years! Our multi-disciplinary approach to movement, arts, science discovery, and conceptual learning has always been apart of our experience. We’ve been introducing aspects of S.T.E.A.M. – based learning long before the term became recognizable.

Today we move full S.T.E.A.M. ahead by expanding these activities and sharing their benefits with our customers. Our whole  - child approach to play and our ability to support children in exploring their own play preferences takes STEAM learning beyond the blocks you’ll find elsewhere.

S.T.E.A.M. activities help teach young children to become confident observers, makers and problem solvers. This is accomplished by teaching them critical thinking skills (think Common Core State Standards) through open-ended exploration of the materials.

Baby Lab – Age 0-10 months

Welcome to the arrival of Baby Lab! An immersive and cutting –edge paly experience filled with sensory discovery for our littlest explorers. Baby lab exposes year one babies to a curated set of thematic props that focus on sensory learning theme. We are bringing in more opportunities for language, movement, music, exploration, sensory integration, social awareness, and tactility. The baby labs focus on the following explorations; Music, Art, Baby sign language, literacy and Lights.

Baby lab stimulates young minds through a multisensory class experience. They’ll develop core strength through use of slides, ramps, and tunnels. Touch and feel a variety of textures using various books and art materials and increase their vision through and array of light and contrasting colors. For the babies to take in everything around them, this class experience is uniquely designed for them.

The current research in infant development directly challenges the former notion that babies are babbling blobs or blank slates waiting for our imprint to provide them with ideas and self-concept. We now know that babies are born wired with more neural connectivity and sensory might than at any other stage of human development. At Gymboree we have a tremendous opportunity to remind infant parents that we’ve been proponents of exposing babies to active experiences form the very start!

Play Lab  - Age 2-5 years

We are taking school readiness and parent engagement into the 21st century by combining our innovative play space with S.T.E.A.M. learning preschool age children age 2- 5years.  Play Lab invites families to explore Science, Tech & Engineering , Art & Math through exciting themes that combine active play nor our equipment with curated manipulatives to spark innovation. With each lab children will develop creativity and problem solving skills by exploring the arts and sciences!

S.T.E.A.M. activities help teach young children to become confident observers, makers and problem solvers. This is accomplished by teaching the critical thinking skills through open ended exploration of materials.

To help distinguish our STEAM program and maintain whole child learning we’ve chosen child centered themes that support the active and investigative nature of play, as they relate to the arts and sciences. Our lab themes echo what children do on their own when they explore. Children spin, tinker, invent, make messes, and noise when they play. Our goal in Play Lab is to maximize both the gross and fine – motor opportunities in STEAM. And help children understand these inherent and well-loved paly concepts more holistically.

We’ve thoughtfully paired our Play Lab themes with our play apparatus and a range of simple curated materials that support children in grasping the arts and sciences The materials and loose parts offer a set of functions that relate to the theme and how children play. Children are encouraged to use the materials in their play with their teacher’s and adults support!
