Memorial Day Weekend In Westchester (by Town)

Memorial day is the kick off to summer in Westchester. Pools open, towns celebrate, there are parades and almost everyone is having a barbeque. Here are the local events for this weekend:

May 22

Valhalla: Ninth annual pre-Memorial Day Service. Wreaths will be given by Kensico Cemetery to representatives of seven other cemeteries in Westchester County to place at the gravesites of eleven Medal of Honor recipients. The ceremony will be held at 2:30 p.m. adjacent to the Administration Building at the Veterans Memorial monument. Special remembrance will be given to the soldiers from Westchester who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the POWs and MIAs. There will also be a moment of silence for Milton Hoffman, U.S. Navy veteran and supporter of veterans affairs, who passed away in April.

Rye: The African American Cemetery Committee.  Services at 10 a.m. at Greenwood Union Cemetery.

May 24

Hastings-on-Hudson: Parade. James Daley VFW Post 200 and Admiral Farragut American Legion Post 1195 host. Step-off at 2 p.m. on Chauncey Lane, continues to Main Street, then north on Warburton Avenue, east on North Street, ends on Maple Avenue.

New Rochelle: Memorial Day service and flag placement on graves at Beechwood Cemetery. 9 a.m. Meet at main entrance.

May 25

Eastchester/Tuckahoe: Ceremony tribute at 8:30 a.m. at World War II Monument, Generoso Pope Plaza, Depot Square in Tuckahoe. Parade steps off at 10 a.m. at Eastchester Town Hall, 40 Mill Road, then proceeds to White Plains Road then north to Eastchester Memorial Park where a closing ceremony will be held.

Elmsford: Parade and service. Parade starts at 10:30 a.m. at Legion Park on Main Street, west on Main Street to South Stone Avenue, endis at Village Hall for a service. Refreshments offered after the service next to Village Hall in Belway Electric's parking lot. If there is bad weather, service will be held at 11 a.m. under a tent at Village Hall. 914-592-6555.

Harrison: Parade 10 a.m. at Halstead Avenue.

New Rochelle: Memorial Day service and wreath-laying at 10 a.m. Memorial Plaza, Memorial Highway and Main Street. A water service at Glen Island Park than  veterans appreciation event, barbecue, all day concert and food from noon-5 p.m. Bring blankets and chairs.

Rye: Parade at 9:30 a.m. from Station Plaza and proceeds along Purchase Street to the Village Green for Memorial Day services, and the awarding of the Legion's Annual Americanism Award, among other recognitions. Rye Fire Department's annual Memorial Day services at the Fire monument in the circle at Milton Road and Grace Church Street. Department members will march from the Locust Avenue Firehouse to the Monument, for a brief ceremony at 8 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., American Legion Post 128 Commander Tom Saunders will begin the formal ceremony on the Green.

Thornwood: Ceremony at 11 a.m. at the monuments at the Old Thornwood Railroad Station, (Thornwood Chamber of Commerce). Refreshments will be served after the ceremony by the Gilbert Rauh American Legion Post No. 1574 at the Legion Hall, 52 Garrigan Ave. If there is bad weather, the ceremony will be held at 52 Garrigan Ave. 914-761-2298.

Valhalla: Parade starts at 9:30 a.m. at Westlake Drive, south on Columbus Avenue. Ceremony at 10 a.m. at Village Green. Refreshments served at American Legion Post No. 1038 after parade and ceremony.

White Plains: Parade begins at 10 a.m. on Church Street, down Main Street to the Rural Cemetery, North Broadway, for services and honors at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument.

Yonkers: Ceremony 9-10 a.m. at Washington Park Veterans Memorial, South Broadway. Parade and ceremony, 10-11:30 a.m., hosted by Ernest Pasqua American Legion Post No. 1506, in Crestwood. Parade begins at 10 a.m. at Schultze Field to the American Legion Plaza near the Crestwood train station. Ceremony 10:30-11:30 a.m. In the event of heavy rain, parade and ceremony will be canceled. Empire VFW Post 375's service 2-3 p.m. at 10 Huber Place.

Yorktown Heights: Parade and ceremonies. Service at memorials at Town Hall at 11 a.m. Followed by parade at 11:15 a.m. Speeches and ceremony at John Jack DeVito Gazebo at the Yorktown Community and Cultural Center. Town Hall, 363 Underhill Ave.

May 29

Piermont: Memorial Day Watchfire will be lit at midnight and burn for 24 hours. The Pier will be open on these dates and permits are not required.

May 30

Mamaroneck: Parade and services. Hosted by Mamaroneck American Legion Post No. 90 and the village. Parade starts at 10 a.m. at Mamaroneck Avenue School, to the Veteran's Memorial on Prospect Avenue. A memorial service at the Kemper Memorial honors Mamaroneck students who died while serving in World War II, will be held at 1:30 p.m.

Mount Kisco: Parade steps off at 4:15 p.m., along Smith Avenue and Main Street to the memorial at the library for ceremonies honoring those fallen in the wars and featuring the winners of the elementary school essay contest, "What Memorial Day Means to Me." In case of rain, ceremonies will be held at the American Legion building at 4 p.m.

Somers: "Operation Victory" will mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and will feature a collection of vintage military vehicles, military memorabilia, big band music, an exhibit on the impact of World War II and food served in an authentic mess tent. Guests are encouraged to dress in period clothing. $20 per vehicle; admission is free for veterans. 11 a.m.-8 p.m. May 30 and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. May 31 at Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial. 914-864-7268, lasdonpark.org.

Yonkers: Parade starts at 1 p.m. with a ceremony at Stillwell Park on McLean Avenue and proceed to the Charles Bajart American Legion Post No. 1122. A ceremony will conclude the parade at the Post with the placing of wreaths. St. John's Church, Getty Square, hosts a ceremony at 11 a.m. at the cemetery, Axminster Road and Saw Mill River Road.
